Consultant Role/ Capability Matrix

We recently asked members of our community for their views on the capabilities required by consultants for a number of different roles.

Thank you to everyone who responded.

We have used the responses to create a Consultant Role/ Capability Matrix which is intended to indicate the relative importance of a number of consultant capabilities in performing a number of different consulting roles.

The key conclusions from the responses that we received are:

  1. Different roles require different sets of skills and experience.

It is important for clients and consultants to be clear about the role to be performed and ensure that the consultant’s set of skills and experience is appropriate to the role.

  1. Specialism is important.

Experience of a client’s industry or expertise in a particular business process are likely to be the most important factors in selecting consultants.

  1. Use of a proven methodology is unlikely to be an important factor in engaging a consultant.

In our recent surveys on Excellence in Consulting, 100% of respondents considered that methods and standards improve quality and that they should be subject to independent certification. However, this survey indicates that the use of a proven methodology is unlikely to be an important factor in engaging a consultant for most types of role.

Do you agree with the results and our conclusions? Let us know what you think.
